John Cale came to New York in the summer of 1963 and immediately gravitated towards La Monte Young and developed a musical discipline. In January, 1965, he met Lou Reed and began an extremely influential collaboration that became the Velvet Underground. After leaving the Velvet Underground in 1968, his solo musical career blossomed.
