When Andy Warhol was trying to break into the art world in the early 1960s, Leo Castelli's gallery was probably the most desirable gallery (its artists included Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg). Castelli invited Warhol to join the gallery in the spring of 1964. Castelli continued to be a kingpin of contemporary dealers until his death.
