An international movement that began in the early 1960s, started in Germany, soon spreading to New York. It set out to transgress standards of art and life, and it freely mixed poets, musicians, and artists in multi-media performance. Geroge Maciunas named the movement, and its participants included a motley group that ranged from Yoko Ono and Joseph Beuys to Ray Johnson and La Monte Young.
