(born Lithuania, 1933)

Beginning in the mid-1950s, Jonas Mekas became a key catalyist for independent film. He founded the magazine Film Culture, began writing for The Village Voice, and guided the Film-Makers Cinematheque. Without his ongoing energy and dedication, continuing to the present at the Anthology Film Archive, American underground film would remain largely unknown.
