A band consisting of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Angus MacLise (soon replaced by Maureen Tucker) got its name in the fall of 1965, based on the title of a book. They came into the Factory orbit in December 1965, and under the aegis of Warhol and Paul Morrissey, they performed as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable in New York at the Dom and on the West Coast; this initial configuration included Nico singing, Gerard Malanga and Mary Woronov dancing, accompanied by projections of Warhol films and colored slides. The group's first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, initially a failure in 1967, became one of the most influential albums of the Sixties. In the fall of 1968 Doug Yule replaced John Cale, and in 1970 the band split up. In 1993 the original members re-united for a European tour.
