Born near Ponce, Puerto Rico, Harold ran away from his parents in Miami to New York in 1963. He lived and worked as a woman, and became friends with Jackie Curtis and Candy Darling. in 1969, John Vaccaro invited him to perform in Jackie Curtis's play, Heaven Grand in Amber Orbit, which led to Paul Morrissey inviting him to perform in Trash, Holly's best-known film. She subsequently appeared in Morrissey's Women in Revolt.
