After coming to New York (from San Francisco, where he was a jazz saxophone player) La Monte Young became involved with the Fluxus movement. In 1963 he started the Theater of Eternal Music (which included John Cale, Tony Conrad, and his wife, Marian Zazeela). His music, based on holding extended tones based on musical intervals (called "drones"), it was radically proto-Minimalist and proved to be influential on later composers.
